Six months ago I was asked by a good family friend to photograph her newborn granddaughter, Maci Jade, and although I had never photographed a newborn, I accepted. The results were not bad, but there were very few finished images to deliver, due to my lack of knowing how to work with babies. Six months later, I was asked to do her 6 month portraits (with a little more experience this time). Everything ran so much smoother in this shoot as opposed to my first session with Maci. I realized that this was because of one thing: we took the time. No matter how much ability you have as a photographer, patience plays a huge roll in children’s photography, where you are always waiting for that perfect mix of expression, body movement, and lighting. With the knowledge that patience will get you exactly what you want, the results are always great (especially with a model like Maci).
